SRI LANKA- conflict due to
-citizenship rights
-university admission

-resettlement policy
-national language
ZE CONSEQUENCES.
-tamil tigers appear
(LTTE) liberation tigers of tamil eelam
-anti tamil riots
-foreign intervention

-tourism drops
-protests falling on deaf ears
things da tamils got goin for them-
-tamil language considered a natn lang
-ext mediators
-power sharing
-set up alt org?
IRELAND
-housing
-voting rights (no longer an issue)
-divided loyalties
-->cathies loyal to ireland,prots to england
-education system
-->largely segregated
-employment opportunities
there is a large bias towards the prots. evil prots.
so the irish went and protested against the protestants (irony,hehe), having peaceful demonstrations and such, BUT the prots were violent and stopped the demonstrations forcibly. the british army was called in to help defuse the tension, but they contributed to the problem by looting irish homes and conducting rough searches. the prots had the ulster party for them, and the cathies started the irish republican army to fight for their rights.
catholic demands for-
o equal treatment
o civil service jobs
met with violence. innocent civilians killed during bloody sunday.
another point we can use is actually the antagonistic nature of the protestants, having marches through the catholic districts to mark their victory over the catholics in a war centuries ago, as king william of orange defeated king james II at the battle of boyne.
economic development has suffered, investments dont come in so readily and tourism has fallen as a result.
how dreary. on to switzerland.
SWITZERLAND
a united country. factors leading to harmony and unity:
-compromise and accomodation
=mutual respect
=favouring minorities
=equality of treatment
-fair laws
-shared history/common identity
-direct democracy
=initiatives (100k signs)
=referendum (50k signs)
-rich culture
-external threat
=due to mixed background. provide WWII as an example.
=strong army
-power sharing
=power shared equally between all races and religions
=civil and voting rights for everyone
WHAT CAN SINGAPORE LEARN?
-national defence
-racial tolerance and respect
-matureness and responsibility in decision making
=introducing foreign talent
INTERNATIONAL CONFLICT AND COOPERATION
natural resources
water
-arab israel conflict over the river jordan
-both sides had own water programs
-national water carrier (NWC) by israelis
-led to war
fish
-iceland vs britain
-fish are icelands main source of revenue. fish stocks declining due to overfishing.
-other countries told to stop. brits dint, and confrontation between icelandic coast guard and brit navy
-differences settled,brits left after six months
ideology
-USA vs USSR (soviet power supreme!)
-the cold war, as both sides mistrusted each other
-cuban missile crisis almost led to nuclear war, and nuclear winter
territorial claims
-sino-indian conflict
-india and china both claimed aksai-chin plateau as their own, after brits left india. chinese built a road on it (BIG FREAKIN DEAL.) and india gets all upset saying that the border was clearly defined, but chinese say they never accepted the brit borders. aww. so there was a short war. then there were negotiations and that was it. they still both claim that 10 by 10 m patch of land.
DIPLOMACY
-diplomacy is the peaceful resolution of conflict
-bilateral relations are the first phase, like international one on one cooperation. like singapore and germany. them with their hot, hot beer babes, and sad singaporean men. beer makes everyone happy doesnt it? if you dont believe me, go ask your local non-religious muslim friend. chances are, he drinks like a fish.
-regional relations, like in the case of Singapore-ASEAN
-->promotes economic and cultural growth and understanding in the region
-->preventing conflict in a region
-->a platform for dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts
-->appreciation of heritage
-or like the european union
-international/multilateral relations
-the united nations
-->prevents international conflict
-->like an international govt
-->gives a voice to each member country
-->providing help to needy countries
-->a voice to each member coutry to voice grievances
-->law of the sea conference chaired by our very own prof tommy koh, increasing our prestige
-->singapore has sent troops overseas on peacekeeping missions
-joined in 1965
BUT
-they are weak american puppets
-kofi eats out of bush's hand
-america provides main funding for this otherwise underfunded organisation
-provides most of the troop support
-this incompetence is seen in the iraq war when america disregarded them and had war anyway, pretty much like that girl disregarded her parents warnings and did it with the neighbours son. now shes in trouble, just like the USA and their wonderfully purported weapons of mass destruction. now shes got stds, but americas just got saddam
-isnt kofi annan just such a delightful name?
DETERRENCE
-were a small country, so we have a two pronged approach, through:
total defence
-getting the whole population involved in defence of the nation. showin the nation our appreciation, and preparin our enemies for a ligation of their nation. haha such doctrination. so its like a citizen armed force.
military prowess
-contrary to popular belief, we have a strong, disciplined army not as chow keng as it seems.
-provided with weapons constantly upgraded by our defence industry to put us on the forefront of technological warfare. dont we rock? maybe.
-military cooperation involving cooperation between countries militarily. duh! sharing of experience. multi lateral excercises also allows us access to resources otherwise unavailable to us, like airspace in australia, and promotes good relations between countries as they learn from each other.
SINGAPORES INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT
-the need for planning was everpresent as singapore was disorganised
1960s-1970s
remember!- CLOFT and SLIPD
Capital (foreign)
foreign capital was essential to allow mnc's to set up their factories here and so provide employment. singapore was the only available option as most new developing asian countries were nationalistic and dint support them. the Economic Development Board was set up to attract this capital,and they personally sent their representative to the board offices of the MNCs. thats how serious they were dudes. some serious shit.
Locating Industries
-singapore located their industries in the appropriate places, like labour intensive factories close to housing estates and the heavy industrial factories near the sea and away from the housing estates.
Organising labour
-lower labour costs
-skilled and peaceful workforce
-no strikes due to internal arbritation courts to settle disputes
-technical education
-labour intensive industries to solve the unemployment problem
Financial services
-other countries set up banks
-MNCs attracted
Transport and Commns
-roads built
-paya lebar airport expanded
-keppel harbour upgraded
AND
Support Facilities
Location of industries
Incentives to foreign workers
Peaceful workforce
Door open to MNCs
1970s-1980s
a change from labour intensive to capital intensive.
LaRDS and INFRASTRUCTURE
now, the problem is with the many jobs and small workforce. a labour shortage, and now foreign competion is startin to piss us off, and productivity is goin down. so we have
Labour adujustments
-decreased labour costs, less leave, etc
-campaigns for increased productivity
-foreign workers
-higher wages
-education and skills training
Research&Development
-newer, better facilities
Support facilities
-support facilities
INDUSTRIAL restructurin is really impt for this bit.
expansion of airports, telecommunications, and harbours
JAPANS INDUSTRIAL GROWTH
-initiatives of jap private companies
-->investments in new technology
-->flexible nature
-->cooperation amongst companies
-->healthy rivalry
-->overseas investments
-good japanese attitude
-->hardworking, loyal and thrifty
-good labour management relations
-external reasons
-->american aid
-->korean war
-->government support
JAPANS INDUSTRIAL SLOWDOWN
-rising impt of service industry takes workforce attn away from industrial stuff
-change in work attitude, changing jobs, not as loyal, want more leave, etc
-global competition
-asian currency crises
there. study hard and good luck!
